ThestorylineofthefilmfollowsseveralwomenwhovolunteerfortheCanteenandwhomustadheretostrictrulesofconduct,themostimportantofwhichisthatwhiletheirjobistoprovidefriendlycompanionshiptoandbedancepartnersforthe(oftennervous)menwhoaresoontobesentintocombat,noromanticfraternizationisallowed.OnevolunteerwhoconfessestoonlybecominginvolvedintheCanteeninordertobediscoveredbyoneoftheHollywoodstarsinattendance,ultimatelyfindsherselffallinginlovewithoneofthesoldiers.Starappearancesrangefrommomentarycameos,suchasJohnnyWeissmuller,seenworkinginthecanteen'skitchen,tomoresubstantialrolessuchasKatharineHepburn,whohelpsadvancetheplot.Mostofthecameoswerefilmedatthestudio,butanumberofspots--BennyGoodman's,forexample--werefilmedinNewYorkCity.
